History of Windlass Group
75 years ago, in 1943, Windlass Group was incorporated at ‘Ghanta Ghar’ of Dehradun, the state capital of Uttarakhand. Since then the group has given employment to 2000 people globally and expanded its footprint worldwide.
Headquartered at Haridwar Road, Dehradun, Windlass is the only name in the state to be known world-wide. The name Windlass is a hallmark of Precision, Quality, Integrity, Trust, and Commitment towards On-Time Delivery.
Windlass began its journey in 1941 when a young and motivated 22 year-old Mr Ved Prakash Windlass moved from Ambala Cantonment to the Doon Valley. He started working as a government contractor and later started his own cutlery unit in 1943 by the name of ‘Windlass Steelcrafts’.
1943
The journey of Windlass Group began when Shri Ved Prakash Windlass moved from Ambala Cantt to Dehradun at the young age of 22 and decided to make Dehradun his home.
1969 - 1979
Shri Ved Prakash Windlass sons, Sudhir and Pradeep Windlass took the small company to the global front forming an alliance with buyers in Europe and USA and soon became a major suplier of dress swords and sabers to the US Marine Corps.
1989 - 1993
Windlass Group constructed the first commercial shopping mall in dehradun, Windlass Shopping Complex at the Clock Tower, Rajpur Road which revolutionized the retail and commercial landscape of the city.
1998
Windlass Group started constructing and operating a business hotel, Hotel Ambassador on Rajpur Road, Dehradun in 1998 which is still one of the most sought after hotels due to its central locations and facilities.
2009
Windlass Group launched Windlass Engineers and Services Pvt. Ltd., manufacturing high quality and precision based oil field equipment
2013
Windlass acquired Toledo sword makers Marto & Bermejo and emerged as the largest producer of swords in the world. Windlass Sword Company, Toledo supplies its products to all leading armies of the world.
2017
Ganga (Phase1) & Bhagirathi (Phase2) – The township has been launched in a phase wise manner with phase 1 Ganga and phase 2 Bhagirathi which included 320 flats in each tower with various smart features and amenities and both phases succesfully delivered in 2021.
2023
Alaknanda (Phase 3) Windlass Developer launched their new luxurious phase of Windlass River Valley phase 3 Alaknanda. This phase consist of 770 apartments with central park and other amenities. Handover started in 2023.
1943 - 1969
After working as a government contractor Shri Ved Prakash Windlass started his own cutlery unit by the name of Windlass Steelcrafts and started manufacturing and supplying ‘Khukri’s’ to the British Gurkha Regiments. During the early days of Independence, Windlass continued supplying to the British in Malaysia and Singapore. In 1965, Windlass received its first order from the indian Army and established itself as a leading knife maker in India.
1979 - 1989
Windlass Steelcrafts kept expanding in the global market to establish its place as a foremost supplier of military swords and armaments and started being recognized as an industry leader.
1995 -1998
Windlass Group took full ownership of Atlanta Cutlery Corporation, USA, and attained a strong foothold in the United States of America. Windlass Group also started manufacturing products and props for blockbuster Hollywood movies & shows such as, Gladiator, Lord of the Rings, Troy, the Game of Thrones series, amongst many others. Museum Replicas Limited was set up as a subsdiary of Atlanta Cutlery in the US.
2006
Windlass Residency was launched in 2006 and was completed and delivered before time to the customers. It consists of 112 – 3 BHK apartments and is still one of the most sought after and vibrant communities in Dehradun.
2012
Windlass Engineers and Services kept expanding its global footprint across Asia, USA, Europe, Middle East & Africa and opened warehousing, service and manufacturing facilities in Houston, USA and Dubai.
2015
Windlass Developer Pvt. Ltd. came into being and launched ‘Windlass River Valley, The Smart Township’, the biggest housing township of 60 lakhs square feet construction area in Dehradun, Uttarakhand.
2020

Windlass Steel Crafts (WSC).
Windlass Steelcrafts (WSC), the flagship company of Windlass Group was established in 1943 by Mr. Ved Prakash Windlass for manufacturing Khukri for the British Gurkha Regiment. WSC is now the largest Sword Manufacturing Company in the world, with state-of-the-art integrated manufacturing facilities in Dehradun, India, and Toledo, Spain. WSC customers range from large blockbuster Hollywood movies to the leading Army’s and Governments around the world.
WSC with its marketing arm Atlanta Cutlery based in Atlanta, USA markets its products all over the world. Windlass’s products can be seen in major Hollywood Blockbusters like Gladiator, Lord of the Rings, Game of Thrones, etc. Armed Forces around the world procure Windlass’s state-of-the-art swords and other armaments for ceremonial purposes. Some of the leading buyers are the US Marines, UK, Colombia, Singapore, Indian Army, Chile, etc.

Windlass Engineers (India,Texas)
Windlass Engineers and Services Private Limited (WESPL) established in 2006 is an ISO 9001:2015 and API – 6A, 16A, 16C and 16D Licensed company of Windlass Group of Companies.
Located on the Haridwar Road, Dehradun, WESPL uses state-of-the-art manufacturing processes manned by qualified and experienced team to manufacture precision-based oil-field drilling equipment such as BOP Control Units, Test Units, Water Blaster, Flanges, Ring Joint Gaskets, Hammer Unions, Swivel Joints, Pup Joints, etc. These products are manufactured in accordance with API (American Petroleum Institute) specifications. WESPL also has service centers in USA, Jakarta, Singapore, Dubai and Muscat to provide support with minimum downtime. They also have technicians capable of providing service at any international location across the world.
Windlass Shopping Complex
Built-in 1993, Windlass Shopping Complex was the first fully integrated shopping mall of the city. The shopping complex revolutionized the retail landscape of Dehradun. Located on Rajpur Road, just opposite the then ISBT, the shops commanded premium rates and were most sought after by any business. The complex was the only one to provide ample parking space and a high-quality shopping experience in the city.
Equipped with two levels of retail, office, and hospitality space the complex continues to be the home of many leading stores and offices of the city including the largest public sector bank of India and one of the leading hotels of the city, Hotel Ambassador. Hotel Ambassador came into being in 1996 on the second floor of the Windlass Shopping Complex. The hotel is one of the leading business hotels in the city due to its central location and vast amenities and services.
Windlass Residency
A leader of its time, the first full-service luxury apartment community in the up-market Dalanwala area was started in 2006 and completed in 2009. The project had 1, 2, 3, and 4 bedroom luxury apartments. The community is the most premium and sought after living spaces in the city. The project received a tremendous response as it was one of the first residential societies in Dalanwala. The construction quality and on-time delivery of Windlass Residency is still appreciated.
Although many residential societies have been developed in Dalanwala over the years, Windlass Residency continues to be one of the most vibrant and centrally located residences for any family in Dehradun.
